DALI Project: St. Peter's Basilica

St. Peter's Basilica

Location: Rome, Italy

DiiA Member: OSRAM

Following nearly 18 month of planning and the installation, St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome has a new LED lighting system, using more than 780 special luminaires equipped with approximately 100,000 LEDs.

Thanks to intelligent lighting control, the lighting of the church, which covers an area of around 22,000 square meters, can be quickly and easily adapted to predefined lighting scenarios.

“More than 500 years of history are now being bathed in digitally controlled LED light,” said Olaf Berlien, CEO of OSRAM Licht AG.

According to a Lux Review article, the DALI-controlled luminaires are in turn connected to the Vatican’s KNX building control system.

Using high-efficiency LED luminaires in combination with the digital control system, the energy usage has been cut by up to 90 percent compared with the old lighting scheme.

The cupola, pictured at right, “was previously lost in the gloom of the previously poorly-maintained traditional lighting. It now features 111 luminaires and is lit with a ‘cross beaming’ technique in which the fittings are targeted at the opposite side to increase uniformity,” says the Lux Review article.

The digital control system allows specific lighting scenarios to be selected, created or modified. Thanks to the new lighting, it is now also possible to transmit television images in high and ultra-high resolution settings with 4K or 8K.

In a separate, earlier project, OSRAM installed 132 Siteco LED floodlights in St. Peter's Square in Rome. The luminaires are controlled with a DALI Professional control system.

"Thanks to modern LED technology in combination with a DALI light management system we achieve energy savings of around 70%," said Carlo Bogani, Executive Project Director at Osram Italy.
